What the markets page shows

This page gives an overhead view of the session in one place: major indices, forex, commodities, a market heatmap, the fear and greed gauge, and market breadth.

The idea is to answer "what is the market doing" before dropping to the level of a single stock. A name down 3% on a day the whole market fell 2.5% has barely moved relative to its surroundings.

Heatmap and breadth — why they matter

A heatmap lays the market out by sector and size, so you can see at a glance whether a move is broad or concentrated in one corner. That distinction is substantive: a day when an index rose because three mega caps rose looks identical to a broad advance until you look at the map.

Breadth measures exactly that — how many stocks advanced against how many declined. An index rising on weak breadth is an index resting on very few shoulders.

The fear and greed gauge

The gauge attempts to quantify sentiment: volatility, momentum, demand for bonds against equities, and more. It is usually read as a contrarian indicator — extreme readings in either direction tend to cluster around turning points.

Worth remembering that it measures a market's emotional state, not value. It says nothing about whether a stock is cheap or expensive, and is no substitute for examining the company.
