Bank Stocks
The large US banks and payment networks — the sector that responds most directly to interest rates.
Banks are the sector that responds most directly to interest rates, which is why they often move opposite to growth stocks. Higher rates widen the spread between what a bank pays on deposits and what it charges on loans.
The other side of that coin is credit risk: higher rates also make it harder for borrowers to repay, and when the economy weakens, provisions for credit losses eat into the margin income. Both forces are always operating at once.
The payment networks in this list behave differently from the banks themselves — they earn a fee on transaction volume and do not carry credit risk in the same way.
Across the 12 names in this list that traded today, the average change was -0.59%. WFC led at 1.96%, and SOFI lagged at -3.78%. A spread that wide inside a single theme shows the move is not uniform, and that the companies are worth looking at individually rather than as a category.
