Magnificent Seven
The seven technology companies that make up an outsized share of the S&P 500 — and much of its movement.
The "Magnificent Seven" describes the group of large technology companies whose combined weight in the S&P 500 has reached an unprecedented level. In practice: when they rise, the index rises — even if most of the other 493 companies are flat.
That is why index performance can mislead. An index up 20% in a year when most of its members barely moved is not telling the same story as one up 20% on a broad advance. An index investor today holds far more concentration than they may assume.
Despite the shared label, the seven are not a homogeneous group: their revenue models differ entirely, and so does their exposure to advertising, cloud, consumer spending and regulation.
Across the 7 names in this list that traded today, the average change was 0.11%. META led at 6.55%, and GOOGL lagged at -2.28%. A spread that wide inside a single theme shows the move is not uniform, and that the companies are worth looking at individually rather than as a category.
