A pharmaceutical business is built around an asset with an expiry date. A patent grants exclusivity for a fixed term, and at its end the price and sales of the drug collapse as generics enter. So the central question about any drug maker is not what it sells today but what will replace it.
That makes the development pipeline as important as the financial statements. A company with excellent earnings and a patent expiring in two years is in a completely different position from one with the same earnings and a new drug in late-stage trials.
The distinctive risk here is binary. Clinical trial results or a regulatory decision can move a stock tens of percent in a single day, in either direction, unrelated to any other economic figure. That is especially true of smaller companies dependent on a single product.
